Behind scale

How scale works

Continue the idea of Ready-made and give one more significant concept which is scale. People recognise scale depend on two main methods mainly experience and comparison. Obviously, our experience leads us to identify and distinguish what we are looking at and tell us what the scale of matters or objects should be. Due to comparison, we can also identify what the scale of matter is. However, one of the matters in comparison should be the object that we have known the scale; otherwise, it is difficult to compare.

The idea of ready-made and reorganisation can break people's experience about what the everything should look like. Furthermore, try to use micro-camera and LED torch to catch the view of the new composition in very detail and then project in very huge view on the wall, which may completely blur the scale of everything single object.

Actual and virtual scale and space

This new composition is defined as a micro site and landscape. The micro-camera is a tool in vision to extend and develop this site. All single objects are put together with new meaning and method of combination to build the imaged landscape. There are three different scales and specific ways to see and observe this site.

1. With micro-camera go through to catch the view of the site very closed in quite small detail and project into huge view --- Although micro-camera catches the view very closed in very small detail, it is projected into a huge scale on the wall, which seems to be people walking in the city and watching many thing in the street. The actual scale is tiniest inside the model while the virtual scale is as huge as urban scale on the wall.

2. With micro-camera walk around to catch the view of the site in fragment in medium distance (not as closed as 1) and project into huge view --- In this medium distance and scale, the fragment of views compose the image of what the site looks like piece by piece which seems to be people walking and watching around the building. Actual and virtual scales here are difficult to identify. The actual scale is exactly between tiniest (model's detail) and largest (whole model). The virtual scale is between city and object.

3. Without any equipment, watch the site with original scale --- After people saw the previous two different scales and then see the actual scale of site, they may wonder and doubt what they actually scale of model and view they have seen before is, especially when people watch model very close and look at some very tiny parts that they have seen the same parts in the huge view.

The actual and virtual scale and space were reversed and blurred via micro-camera, projector and slight LED torch with three specific ways in watching which may also blur the definition of boundary in architecture concurrently. The boundary of architecture and definition may be changed depend on different scales and way to look at.

Internality and externality

When people watch the model with original scale, they may see only external shape, structures and materials while using the micro-camera going through around the model can see more details inside. Both different specific ways to see the model represent the different scales people experience the scale of interior, architecture and city in the daily life. Due to these differences, when view of micro scale is projected into huge scale on the wall and also see the model's outside scale smaller than its inside detail simultaneously, the internality and externality of model in scale might be reversed and blurred. The main reason is people generally can identify the difference between internal and external space. In this model, however, the blurry part not only actual and virtual scale but the boundary between internal and external space. Although there are many tiny details were made including surfaces and structures to make up whole model, the boundary between internal and external is tend to be ignored. In the process of producing model, every object is put to cover some part of model and also be covered by others, which is no necessary to divide inside and outside.
Therefore, it can be said this model have both characteristics between internality and externality; moreover, some parts of model have both features. In other word, the boundary between internality and externality is going to be blurred because of the switch of the actual and virtual space and unclear division of inside and outside characteristics.

Draft/Fragment/Metaphor/Joining/Crudity/Unprogramme

If I define these single objects as a condition of making event such as people, space, time and so on, the surfaces such as structures or methods for joinings between objects can be define as events. The reason is "event" is a result of multi-conditions which contain a variety of elements; therefore, when these different elements put together, they will interact each other and cause events. For the model, these events like joinings are unprogrammed because these single objects were not expected to be composed in the beginning of the purpose during the process of the production. Therefore, these joining methods are the unexpected behaviors. In other words, they are the events in the unprogrammed situations, which create their method to exist and stand , named "joining language".
When I use this concept to compare with real space or large scale space, the events may be defined as the redefinition or re-explanation of space. For example, when the original programme is removed from the space, new or unexpected programme is inserted. The original space will communicate with the new or unexpected programme. The surface or event between them is the exact matter to join them together.
Therefore, I can say I am the person who creates the events(joining language) in unprogrammed situation. Hence, how people consider the event equal how viewers look at this model(joining language). To be more specific, how viewers can participate this model( joining language) or what the methods including distance, viewpoint and projection of interior/ exterior and so on to look at this model are the next step I am going to discuss. Obviously, the Joining language is not only the method which joins different objects but also the way how people can participate in looking at the model.
In addition, what the effect after looking at model and what I really want to communicate with viewers from model will be taken into main consideration as well in the next step.

Ready-made and Deconstruction

Ready-made
The definition of ready-made in noun: Ordinary, usually mass-produced object displayed as a work of art; also, a composition consisting of more than one such object. In my definition is break the original meaning and create the new meaning.
A cup as an example to explain the ready-made and a similar system in the word. The first four photos describe the original meaning of cup is changed when the cup has different positions. The word system just identifies this concept. 1. The word"cup"matches how the itself be used. 2. Form:same Meaning:changed - put the cup upside down, although the form is the same, but the meaning is different which could be defined as a cover. Therefore, the word"cup" keeps the same letters but the order is different. 3. Form:changed Meaning:same - although the cup is broken, but it still can be used to hold some water which is similar to spoon or leave. Thus, use the word"mug" to keep the same meaning of cup but different word. 4. Form:changed Meaning:changed - completely broke the cup and put them as a circle so everything is changed. Hence, use the different word"tub" to represent the word"cup".

The last three photos are to describe the same idea but with two different stuff. When two different matters are put together, one matter could change the other one depend on how one matter uses the other one. They create their relation together. In the word's system on the other hand, I need to create new words to match their specific new meanings or forms. 1. Form:same Meaning:changed - when pens are put into the cup, the cup's meaning is different. Therefore, put their words together to represent original meaning of the word"cup" to create the new word which is "pen-cup". 2. Form:changed Meaning:same - use the rubber band to tie up the pens. they are still the pens but multi-pen or big pen even though the original shape have been changed. Thus, create the new word "rubber-pen" to represent the word"pen". 3. Form:changed Meaning:changed - completely broke the cup and put them on the clay as a defender on the outside wall. the meaning and shape of cup has completely changed as a part of clay. Hence, use the new word"cup-clay" stand for "cup".

Deconstruction

These new words are just the words which are not really useful if I didn't use them. Therefore, after that, I wrote a short paragraph to describe my room and put these seven words to represent some words from the paragraph gradually. There are three steps in representations. 1.represent objects 2.represent verbs 3. represent subjects Three steps will gradually destroy the original paragraph which means it is going to be difficult to read from one word to one sentence and to whole paragraph, and finally, the new words will have their own system in this paragraph which exists with the original system.

Original Paragraph

My room is a standard study room, where is an oblong including a big desk, a single bed, a cabinet, an unmovable bookshelf on the wall, and a big window toward Camden town. Sometimes sunshine comes through the window into the room and makes room be more bright and dynamic. In addition, I brought a lot of architectural books and some relevant documents from Taiwan putting on the bookshelf as the references which might enlighten and motivate me in design. Also, I collected some interesting leaflets and postcards sticking on the wall everywhere making my room messy but interesting. Surely, I also bought some design and artistic books here especially when I went to see some exhibitions which are always put around me; therefore, I can get them quickly when I need. As a student, laptop as a 3d model producer is a second life to me especially for my project although I also quite enjoy doing some model by hand, and it is also a connecter to me between London and Taiwan. Overall, I quite like and enjoy studying in my room.

Step1

My pen-cup is a standard study rubber-pen, where is an oblong including a big cup-clay, a single pen-cup, a rubber-pen, an unmovable cup-clay on the wall, and a big pen-cup toward Camden town. Sometimes cup-clay comes through the window into the rubber-pen and makes rubber-pen be more bright and dynamic. In addition, I brought a lot of architectural pen-cup and some relevant documents from Taiwan putting on the rubber-pen as the references which might enlighten and motivate me in design. Also, I collected some interesting cup-clay and pen-cup sticking on the wall everywhere making my rubber-pen messy but interesting. Surely, I also bought some design and artistic pen-cup here especially when I went to see some cup-clay which are always put around me; therefore, I can get them quickly when I need. As a student, pen-cup as a 3d model producer is a second life to me especially for my project although I also quite enjoy doing some cup-clay by hand, and it is also a connecter to me between London and Taiwan. Overall, I quite like and enjoy studying in my rubber-pen.

Step2

My pen-cup mug a standard study rubber-pen, where mug an oblong including a big cup-clay, a single pen-cup, a rubber-pen, an unmovable cup-clay on the wall, and a big pen-cup toward Camden town. Sometimes cup-clay tub through the window into the rubber-pen and mug rubber-pen be more bright and dynamic. In addition, I tub a lot of architectural pen-cup and some relevant documents from Taiwan putting on the rubber-pen as the references which mug tub and mug me in design. Also, I tub some interesting cup-clay and pen-cup sticking on the wall everywhere making my rubber-pen messy but interesting. Surely, I also mug some design and artistic pen-cup here especially when I tub to see some cup-clay which mug always put around me; therefore, I tub mug them quickly when I tub. As a student, pen-cup as a 3d model producer mug a second life to me especially for my project although I also quite tub mug some cup-clay by hand, and it mug also a connecter to me between London and Taiwan. Overall, I quite tub and mug studying in my rubber-pen.

Step3

Upc pen-cup mug a standard study rubber-pen, where mug an oblong including a big cup-clay, a single pen-cup, a rubber-pen, an unmovable cup-clay on the wall, and a big pen-cup toward Camden town. Sometimes cup-clay tub through the window into the rubber-pen and mug rubber-pen be more bright and dynamic. In addition, cup tub a lot of architectural pen-cup and some relevant documents from Taiwan putting on the rubber-pen as the references which mug tub and mug cup in design. Also, cup tub some interesting cup-clay and pen-cup sticking on the wall everywhere making upc rubber-pen messy but interesting. Surely, cup also mug some design and artistic pen-cup here especially when cup tub to see some cup-clay which mug always put around cup; therefore, cup tub mug them quickly when cup tub. As a student, pen-cup as a 3d model producer mug a second life to me especially for upc project although cup also quite tub mug some cup-clay by hand, and it mug also a connecter to cup between London and Taiwan. Overall, cup quite tub and mug studying in upc rubber-pen.

In the next test, I destroyed my room step by step, and the purpose was to change the function as a study room. Thus, I removed everything from my room gradually and also put them back but in different ways which reflected the same meaning and method from the idea of deconstruction paragraph. Different way means take out their original meanings and functions ,and give them new one.

Critical Point

In the paragraph, the original content and description will be changed gradually until reaching a point and they will completely destroyed and unrecognisable, which is critical point of this paragraph. When I look back the photos I recorded about my room, I found the function of study room was very clear until I removed the desk. Therefore, I erased the desk first before I removed everything. At that moment the room was much weak in recognition as a study room than previous set of photos. The desk, this element could be the main matter to define the study room which can be compared with critical point.

Playground

How playground equipments can bring fun and ideas in games? How children define these equipments? The answer may be in children's mind which depend on how they want to play with equipments and who play with them. These new equipments just give themselves basic function in climb and they can be organised again and again in different ways as well.

DEVELOPMENT AND SITE

The site is located in front of Anatomy Building where has pipeline space between building and street. The reason why I chose this site is most of surface of buildings in UCL are quite similar which is difficult to recognise and remember. Therefore, the model of the purpose are to change the surface of building to make it easy to recognise and be more interesting. The other reason is this building has a little different from other buildings because  it has pipeline space where can be a site to model occupying as a base. The pipeline extends along with building surface; therefore, model can occupy and change the surface along with pipeline space. The first step is to study the site and try to give some simple responses. I chose three semi-sites where have some specific relations with its surroundings so I can use these relations to respond simply. I changed the angle and scale of model in three semi[sites to develop and extend depend on what the purposes are in the sites.

Site 1
Some students park their bikes here always. Therefore I try to extend the model from pipeline space to streetlight to build a shed to cover a part of street.

Site 2
There has a door in the basement. Thus I build a emergent stair to connect basement and ground floor.

Site 3
The tree is just between two windows. Therefore I build a bridge between building and tree which directly connect the relation between building and tree, between people and tree.

Finally, I chose the third site to develop deeply. This surface of building change and be different when shadow of tree project on the wall in the morning. Thus, I stood between tree and building and used model to record the changes of shadow at 12:30, 13:00 and 13:30 when the shadow projects on the wall of first floor. The reason why I chose this period is during this period, the shadow just project  between the wall of ground and second floor. There is no necessary to record the shadow on the wall of ground floor because people can see that and feel the different. The shadow projects on the wall of second floor is too high to see and feel. Therefore, the first floor can be the much choice to record and reproduce. I pull down the shadow on the first floor because of visible range and hight. These three different times have their central point at the bottom of shadow I can follow. After I pull down the shadows to ground floor surface, I chose some clear branches as the point to connect back to model and tree. The role of model here is to record the change of shadow and respond them via connection between wall and tree. Thus, the model also plays a role as a connecter here.

OCCUPATION

I chose these three sites to observe how the models can exist along without damage surfaces of sites. Three different situations show how the models develop their structures to match and hang on themselves with new structures.

There have two conditions which should be satisfied for choosing site.

1. The model can hang on without reach the ground.

2. The site is not really used such as between space
